I love this. I get three responses to saying I am studying to be a criminologist. 1. Face lights up – ‘did you see that murder/drug case/true crime case/CSI episode’ 2. Respectful nod – ‘sounds….serious, what is that?’ or the more common – 3. blank look. With 1 I just happily discuss whatever case, with 2. I say ‘it’s the study of crime’, and quickly move on before I bore the person to death and with 3 they tend to change the subject so as not to show they don’t get it. When it comes to family a more passionate defence of ‘yes, I will one day be paid to do this’ was required.
